About National Sustainable Structures Center

Located at Pennsylvania College of Technology's General Services building in Williamsport, PA, NSSC (formerly the Weatherization Training Center) was established in 1985 as a result of a partnership between Penn College and the PA Department of Community & Economic Development. NSSC’s mission is to provide building science and energy conservation training in both the commercial and residential fields. Since its inception, NSSC has taught more than 14,000 individuals in building science standards and energy efficient retrofit techniques

As one of the few Legacy Weatherization Training Centers, NSSC offers a full range of competency-based weatherization training courses for home performance contractors, utility companies, and persons who are employed by or subcontract to agencies that administer the Department of Energy’s Weatherization Assistance Program and the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program.

As a Building Performance Institute (BPI) Testing Center, NSSC offers training and testing for BPI certifications and the NREL/BPI Home Energy Professional certifications.

In 2013, NSSC expanded its training offerings to include the Building Operator Certificate (BOC) and Commercial Building Re-tuning training in the Mid-Atlantic region (Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia).

Affiliation

NSSC is associated with Pennsylvania College of Technology, whose history and development into one of the nation's premier technical colleges, its resources, and physical plant, makes for an excellent training environment.

NSSC operates under Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Workforce Development & Continuing Education, which offers noncredit training and workforce development to industry and the general public.

IRECIREC Accredited Home Energy Professional Training Programs

NSSC is the first training center in Pennsylvania to hold accreditation for all four Home Energy Professional training programs (Quality Control Inspector, Retrofit Installer Technician, Crew Leader, and Energy Auditor). The Interstate Renewable Energy Council, a top accreditation and credentialing body for training programs and instructors in the clean energy field, awarded accreditation to NSSC's HEP training programs under IREC Standard 01023:2013.
